These are expressions used when giving or getting directions in Tamil. Very useful when trying to find your way around or when lost.
| Excuse me! (to ask someone): என்னை மன்னியுங்கள்! (யாராவது கேட்டால்) eṉṉai maṉṉiyuṅkaḷ! (Yārāvatu kēṭṭāl) |
Can you show me?: உங்களால் எனக்கு காட்ட முடியுமா? uṅkaḷāl eṉakku kāṭṭa muṭiyumā? |
| I'm lost: நான் இழந்துவிட்டேன் Nāṉ iḻantuviṭṭēṉ |
I'm not from here: நான் இங்கு இல்லை nāṉ iṅku illai |
| Can I help you?: நான் உங்களுக்கு உதவட்டுமா? nāṉ uṅkaḷukku utavaṭṭumā? |
Can you help me?: நீங்கள் எனக்கு உதவ முடியுமா? Nīṅkaḷ eṉakku utava muṭiyumā? |
| It's near here: அது இங்கிருந்து அருகில் உள்ளது Atu iṅkiruntu arukil uḷḷatu |
It's far from here: அது இங்கிருந்து தொலைவில் உள்ளது atu iṅkiruntu tolaivil uḷḷatu |
| Go straight: நேராக செல் nērāka cel |
Turn left: இடது பக்கம் திரும்பு iṭatu pakkam tirumpu |
| Turn right: வலது பக்கம் திரும்பு valatu pakkam tirumpu |
One moment please!: தயவு செய்து ஒரு கணம் காத்திருங்கள்! tayavu ceytu oru kaṇam kāttiruṅkaḷ! |
| Come with me!: என்னுடன் வாருங்கள்! Eṉṉuṭaṉ vāruṅkaḷ! |
How can I get to the museum? : அருங்காட்சியகத்திற்கு நான் எப்படிச் செல்ல முடியும்? Aruṅkāṭciyakattiṟku nāṉ eppaṭic cella muṭiyum? |
| How long does it take to get there?: எவ்வளவு தூரம் அதை எடுத்து செல்ல வேண்டும்? Evvaḷavu tūram atai eṭuttu cella vēṇṭum? |
Downtown (city center): டவுன்டவுன் (நகரத்தின் மையம்) Ṭavuṉṭavuṉ (nakarattiṉ maiyam) |
The following are words which might be used alone or in combination with other words to ask or give directions.
| Near: அருகில் arukil |
Far: தொலைவு / தூரம் tolaivu/ tūram |
Right: வலது valatu |
Left: இடது iṭatu |
| Straight: நேராக nērāka |
There: அங்கு aṅku |
Here: இங்கு iṅku |
To walk: நடப்பதற்கு naṭappataṟku |
| To drive: ஓட்டுவதற்கு ōṭṭuvataṟku |
To turn: திரும்புவதற்கு tirumpuvataṟku |
Traffic light: போக்குவரத்து சமிக்ஞை pōkkuvarattu camikñai |
