Afrikaans Directions

These are expressions used when giving or getting directions in Afrikaans. Very useful when trying to find your way around or when lost.

Excuse me! (to ask someone): Verskoon my
Can you show me?: Kan u my wys?
I'm lost: Ek het verdwaal
I'm not from here: Ek is nie van hier nie
Can I help you?: Kan ek u help? 'U' here is the formal form of address. Could also use 'jou'
Can you help me?: Kan u mey help?
It's near here: Dis hier naby
It's far from here: Dis ver hiervandaan
Go straight: Gaan reguit (aan)
Turn left: Draai links
Turn right: Draai regs
One moment please!: Net 'n oomblik, asseblief
Come with me!: Kom saam (met my)
How can I get to the museum? : Hoe kom ek by die museum?
How long does it take to get there?: Hoe lank vat dit om daar te kom?
Downtown (city center): middestad

The following are words which might be used alone or in combination with other words to ask or give directions.

Near: naby
Far: ver
Right: regs
Left: links
Straight: reguit
There: daar
Here: hier
To walk: stap
To drive: ry
To turn: draai
Traffic light: verkeerslig
