Finnish Pronouns

This is a list of pronouns in Finnish. This includes subject, object, and the possessive. These are used on a daily basis, so don't skip this lesson. We start with the object pronouns such as "I, you, her ..."

I: minä
You: sinä
He: hän
She: hän
We: me
You (pl.): te
They: he

Here are samples to demonstrate how the object pronoun is used in a sentence.

I love you: Rakastan sinua
She is beautiful: Hän on kaunis
We are happy: Olemme onnellisia
They are dancing: He tanssivat

Now we look into the subject pronoun such as "me, him, us, them ...".

Me: minut, minua, minulle
You: sinut, sinua, sinulle
Him: hänet, häntä, hänelle
Her: hänet, häntä, hänelle
Us: meidät, meitä, meille
You (pl.): teidät, teitä, teille
Them: heidät, heitä, heille

These are examples to demonstrate how the subject pronoun is used in a sentence.

Give me your phone number: Anna minulle puhelinnumerosi
I can give you my email: Voin antaa sinulle sähköpostiosoitteeni
Tell him to call me: Käske häntä soittamaan minulle
Can you call us?: Voitko soittaa meille?

We reach now the possessive adjective part, used to refer to thing we possess. Examples: "my, our, their ...".

My: minun
Your: sinun
His: hänen
Her: hänen
Our: meidän
Your (pl.): teidän
Their: heidän

Here are samples to demonstrate how the possessive adjective is used.

My phone number is . . .: Minun puhelinnumeroni on...
His email is . . .: Hänen sähköpostiosoitteensa on...
Our dream is to visit Spain: Meidän unelmamme on käydä Espanjassa
Their country is beautiful: Heidän maansa on kaunis

This is the possessive pronoun. Used as an alternative to the possessive adjectives above. Instead of saying "It is my dog" you can say "It is mine".

Mine: minun
Yours: sinun
His: hänen
Hers: hänen
Ours: meidän
Yours (pl.): teidän
Theirs: heidän

These are some examples of the possessive pronoun in a sentence.

The book is mine: Kirja on minun
Is this pen yours?: Onko tämä kynä sinun?
The shoes are hers: Kengät ovat hänen
Victory is ours: Voitto on meidän
