Portuguese Pronouns

This is a list of pronouns in Portuguese. This includes subject, object, and the possessive. These are used on a daily basis, so don't skip this lesson. We start with the object pronouns such as "I, you, her ..."

I: eu
You: tu
He: ele
She: ela
We: nós
You (pl.): Vocês / Vós
They: eles, elas

Here are samples to demonstrate how the object pronoun is used in a sentence.

I love you: eu amo-te
She is beautiful: ela é linda
We are happy: Nós somos felizes
They are dancing: Eles estão a dançar

Now we look into the subject pronoun such as "me, him, us, them ...".

Me: ~me
You: -te; -o; -a ;-lo; -la;
Him: -o; -lo; -no
Her: -a; -la; -na
Us: ~nos
You (pl.): -os; -los; -nos; -as; -las; -nas
Them: os / as; lhes

These are examples to demonstrate how the subject pronoun is used in a sentence.

Give me your phone number: Dá-me o teu número de telefone.
I can give you my email: Posso dar-te o meu e-mail.
Tell him to call me: Diz-lhe para me ligar.
Can you call us?: Podes ligar-nos?

We reach now the possessive adjective part, used to refer to thing we possess. Examples: "my, our, their ...".

My: meu(s) / minha(s)
Your: teu(tua) / seu(sua)
His: seu(sua) / dele
Her: sua / dela
Our: nosso(a) / nossos(as)
Your (pl.): vosso(a) / vossos(as)
Their: seus, suas

Here are samples to demonstrate how the possessive adjective is used.

My phone number is . . .: O meu número de telefone é
His email is . . .: O e-mail dele é
Our dream is to visit Spain: O nosso sonho é visitar Espanha
Their country is beautiful: O país deles é bonito

This is the possessive pronoun. Used as an alternative to the possessive adjectives above. Instead of saying "It is my dog" you can say "It is mine".

Mine: meu(s) / minha(s)
Yours: teu(tua) / seu(sua)
His: seu(sua) / dele
Hers: sua / dela
Ours: nosso, nossa
Yours (pl.): seu
Theirs: seus, suas (deles, delas)

These are some examples of the possessive pronoun in a sentence.

The book is mine: O livro é meu
Is this pen yours?: Esta caneta é tua?
The shoes are hers: Os sapatos são dela
Victory is ours: A vitória é nossa
