Hungarian Pronouns

This is a list of pronouns in Hungarian. This includes subject, object, and the possessive. These are used on a daily basis, so don't skip this lesson. We start with the object pronouns such as "I, you, her ..."

I: én
You: te
He: ő
She: ő
We: mi
You (pl.): ti
They: ők

Here are samples to demonstrate how the object pronoun is used in a sentence.

I love you: szeretlek
She is beautiful: (ő) gyönyörű
We are happy: boldogok vagyunk
They are dancing: (ők) táncolnak

Now we look into the subject pronoun such as "me, him, us, them ...".

Me: engem
You: Önt / téged
Him: őt
Her: őt
Us: minket
You (pl.): Önöket / titeket
Them: őket

These are examples to demonstrate how the subject pronoun is used in a sentence.

Give me your phone number: Add meg a telefonszámod
I can give you my email: Megadhatom neked az e-mail címem
Tell him to call me: Szólj neki (ffi-nak), hogy hívjon fel engem
Can you call us?: Fel tudna / tudnál hívni minket?

We reach now the possessive adjective part, used to refer to thing we possess. Examples: "my, our, their ...".

My: az én....
Your: az Ön.... / a te....
His: az ő...
Her: az ő...
Our: a mi....
Your (pl.): a ti...
Their: az ő....

Here are samples to demonstrate how the possessive adjective is used.

My phone number is . . .: (az én) telefonszámom ...
His email is . . .: (az ő) email címe ...
Our dream is to visit Spain: az az álmunk, hogy elmenjünk Spanyolországba
Their country is beautiful: Az országuk gyönyörű

This is the possessive pronoun. Used as an alternative to the possessive adjectives above. Instead of saying "It is my dog" you can say "It is mine".

Mine: (az) enyém
Yours: (a) tiéd
His: (az) övé
Hers: (az) övé
Ours: (a) mienk
Yours (pl.): (a) tiétek
Theirs: (az) övék

These are some examples of the possessive pronoun in a sentence.

The book is mine: A könyv az enyém
Is this pen yours?: Ez a te tollad?
The shoes are hers: A cipő az övé.
Victory is ours: Miénk a győzelem
