Cantonese Pronouns

This is a list of pronouns in Cantonese. This includes subject, object, and the possessive. These are used on a daily basis, so don't skip this lesson. We start with the object pronouns such as "I, you, her ..."

They: 佢哋
qú diè

Here are samples to demonstrate how the object pronoun is used in a sentence.

I love you: 我愛你
wǒ ài nǐ
She is beautiful: 佢好靚女
qú hǎo jìngnǚ
We are happy: 我地好開心
wǒ dì hǎo kāixīn
They are dancing: 佢地跳緊舞
qú de tiào jǐn wǔ

Now we look into the subject pronoun such as "me, him, us, them ...".

Me:

Him:

Her:

Us: 我哋
wǒ diè
You (pl.): 你哋
nǐ diè
Them: 佢哋
qú diè

These are examples to demonstrate how the subject pronoun is used in a sentence.

Give me your phone number: 俾你個電話號碼我
bǐ nǐ gè diànhuà hàomǎ wǒ
I can give you my email: 我可以俾我個電郵地址你
wǒ kěyǐ bǐ wǒ gè diànyóu dìzhǐ nǐ
Tell him to call me: 叫佢打電話俾我
jiào qú dǎ diànhuà bǐ wǒ
Can you call us?: 你可唔可以打電話俾我地?
nǐ kě wú kěyǐ dǎ diànhuà bǐ wǒ de?

We reach now the possessive adjective part, used to refer to thing we possess. Examples: "my, our, their ...".

My: 我嘅
wǒ kǎi
Your: 你嘅
nǐ kǎi
His: 佢嘅
qú kǎi
Her: 佢嘅
qú kǎi
Our: 我哋嘅
wǒ diè kǎi
Your (pl.): 你哋嘅
nǐ diè kǎi
Their: 佢哋嘅
qú diè kǎi

Here are samples to demonstrate how the possessive adjective is used.

My phone number is . . .: 我個電話號碼係
wǒ gè diànhuà hàomǎ xì
His email is . . .: 佢個電郵地址係
qú gè diànyóu dìzhǐ xì
Our dream is to visit Spain: 我地嘅夢想係去西班牙
wǒ de kǎi mèngxiǎng xì qù xībānyá
Their country is beautiful: 佢地個國家好靚
qú de gè guójiā hǎo jìng

This is the possessive pronoun. Used as an alternative to the possessive adjectives above. Instead of saying "It is my dog" you can say "It is mine".

Mine: 我嘅
wǒ kǎi
Yours: 你嘅
nǐ kǎi
His: 佢嘅
qú kǎi
Hers: 佢嘅
qú kǎi
Ours: 我哋嘅
wǒ diè kǎi
Yours (pl.): 你哋嘅
nǐ diè kǎi
Theirs: 佢哋嘅
qú diè kǎi

These are some examples of the possessive pronoun in a sentence.

The book is mine: 本書係我嘅
běnshū xì wǒ kǎi
Is this pen yours?: 呢支筆係唔係你㗎?
ne zhī bǐ xì wú xì nǐ 㗎?
The shoes are hers: 嗰對鞋係佢嘅
Gè duì xié xì qú kǎi
Victory is ours: 勝利係屬於我哋嘅
shènglì xì shǔyú wǒ diè kǎi
