Hindi Pronouns

This is a list of pronouns in Hindi. This includes subject, object, and the possessive. These are used on a daily basis, so don't skip this lesson. We start with the object pronouns such as "I, you, her ..."

I: मैं
maĩ
You: आप
āpa
He: वह(पुरुष)
vaha(puruṣa)
She: वह(स्त्री)
vaha(strī)
We: हम
hama
You (pl.): आप (बहुवचन)
āpa (bahuvacana)
They: वे

Here are samples to demonstrate how the object pronoun is used in a sentence.

I love you: मैं तुमसे प्यार करता हूँ
maĩ tumasē pyāra karatā hū̃
She is beautiful: वह(स्त्री) सुंदर है
vaha(strī) sundara hai
We are happy: हम खुश हैं
hama khuśa haĩ
They are dancing: वे नाच रहे हैं
vē nāca rahē haĩ

Now we look into the subject pronoun such as "me, him, us, them ...".

Me: मैं
maĩ
You: आप
āpa
Him: उसे(पुरुष)
usē(puruṣa)
Her: उसके(स्त्री)
usakē(strī)
Us: हमें

You (pl.): आप (बहुवचन)
āpa (bahuvacana)

These are examples to demonstrate how the subject pronoun is used in a sentence.

Give me your phone number: मुझे अपना फोन नंबर दें
mujhē apanā phōna nambara dē dō
I can give you my email: मैं आपको अपना ईमेल दे सकता हुँ
maĩ āpakō apanā īmēla dē sakatā hũ
Tell him to call me: उससे कही कि मुझे कॉल करे
mujhē kôla karanē kē liē usē batāō
Can you call us?: क्या आप हमें फोन कर सकते हैं?
kyā āpa hamē̃ phōna kara sakatē haĩ?

We reach now the possessive adjective part, used to refer to thing we possess. Examples: "my, our, their ...".

My: मेरे
mērē
Your: आपके
āpakē
His: (पुरुष)
(puruṣa)
Her: उसके(स्त्री)
usakē(strī)
Our: हमारे
hamārē
Your (pl.): अपने (बहुवचन)
apanē (bahuvacana)
Their: उनके
unakē

Here are samples to demonstrate how the possessive adjective is used.

Our dream is to visit Spain: हमारा सपना स्पेन यात्रा करने के लिए है
hamārā sapanā spēna yātrā karanē kē liē hai
Their country is beautiful: उनके देश सुंदर है
unakē dēśa sundara hai

This is the possessive pronoun. Used as an alternative to the possessive adjectives above. Instead of saying "It is my dog" you can say "It is mine".

Mine: मेरा
mērā
Yours: तुम्हारा
tumhārā
His: उसका(पुरुष)
usakā(puruṣa)
Hers: उसका(स्त्री)
usakā(strī)
Ours: हमारा
hamārā
Yours (pl.): तुम्हारा (बहुवचन)
tumhārā (bahuvacana)
Theirs: उनकी
unakī

These are some examples of the possessive pronoun in a sentence.

The book is mine: पुस्तक मेरा है
pustaka mērā hai
Is this pen yours?: क्या यह कलम तुम्हारा है?
kyā yaha kalama tumhārā hai?
The shoes are hers: जूते उसके हैं
jūtē usakā haĩ
Victory is ours: जीत हमारी है
jīta hamārā hai
