German Pronouns

This is a list of pronouns in German. This includes subject, object, and the possessive. These are used on a daily basis, so don't skip this lesson. We start with the object pronouns such as "I, you, her ..."

I: ich
You: du, Sie
He: er
She: sie
We: wir
You (pl.): ihr
They: sie

Here are samples to demonstrate how the object pronoun is used in a sentence.

I love you: Ich liebe dich
She is beautiful: Sie ist schön
We are happy: Wir sind glücklich
They are dancing: Sie tanzen

Now we look into the subject pronoun such as "me, him, us, them ...".

Me: mir, mich
You: dir, dich, Ihnen, Sie
Him: ihm, ihn
Her: ihr, sie
Us: uns
You (pl.): euer
Them: ihnen, sie

These are examples to demonstrate how the subject pronoun is used in a sentence.

Give me your phone number: Gibt mir deine Telefonnummer
I can give you my email: Ich kann dir meine E-Mail geben
Tell him to call me: Sagt ihm, mich anzurufen
Can you call us?: Können Sie uns anrufen?

We reach now the possessive adjective part, used to refer to thing we possess. Examples: "my, our, their ...".

My: mein, meine
Your: dein, deine, Ihr, Ihre
His: sein, seine
Her: ihr, ihre
Our: unser, unsere
Your (pl.): eurer
Their: ihr, ihre

Here are samples to demonstrate how the possessive adjective is used.

My phone number is . . .: Meine Telefonnummer ist ...
His email is . . .: Seine E-Mail ist ...
Our dream is to visit Spain: Unser Traum ist es, Spanien zu besuchen
Their country is beautiful: Ihr Land ist schön

This is the possessive pronoun. Used as an alternative to the possessive adjectives above. Instead of saying "It is my dog" you can say "It is mine".

Mine: meins
Yours: deins, Ihres
His: seins
Hers: ihres
Ours: unseres
Yours (pl.): eures
Theirs: ihres

These are some examples of the possessive pronoun in a sentence.

The book is mine: Das Buch ist meins
Is this pen yours?: Ist das Stift deins?
The shoes are hers: Die Schuhe sind ihres
Victory is ours: Der Sieg ist unser
