Gaelic Pronouns

This is a list of pronouns in Gaelic. This includes subject, object, and the possessive. These are used on a daily basis, so don't skip this lesson. We start with the object pronouns such as "I, you, her ..."

I: mi
You: thu
He: e
She: i
We: sinn
You (pl.): sibh
They: iad

Here are samples to demonstrate how the object pronoun is used in a sentence.

I love you: Tha gaol agam ortsa.
She is beautiful: Tha i bòidheach.
We are happy: Tha sinn toilichte.
They are dancing: Tha iad a' dannsa.

Now we look into the subject pronoun such as "me, him, us, them ...".

These are examples to demonstrate how the subject pronoun is used in a sentence.

Give me your phone number: Thoir an àireamh fòn agad dhomh.
I can give you my email: 'S urrainn dhomh am post-d agam toirt dhut.
Tell him to call me: Abair ris a chuir fòn thugam.
Can you call us?: An cuir sibh fòn thugainn?

We reach now the possessive adjective part, used to refer to thing we possess. Examples: "my, our, their ...".

Her: a
Our: ar
Your (pl.): ur
Their: an

Here are samples to demonstrate how the possessive adjective is used.

My phone number is . . .: 'S e ….. a th' ann an àireamh fòn agam.
His email is . . .: 'S e …. a th' ann am post-d aige.
Our dream is to visit Spain: 'S ann dol don Spàinnt a tha am bruadair againn.
Their country is beautiful: Tha an dùthaich aca àlainn.

This is the possessive pronoun. Used as an alternative to the possessive adjectives above. Instead of saying "It is my dog" you can say "It is mine".

Mine: leamsa
Yours: leatsa
His: leis-fhèin
Hers: leatha-fhèin
Ours: leinnse
Yours (pl.): leibhse
Theirs: leotha-fhèin

These are some examples of the possessive pronoun in a sentence.

The book is mine: 'S ann leamsa a tha an leabhar!
Is this pen yours?: A bheil am peann seo leatsa?
The shoes are hers: 'S ann leatha-fhèin a tha na brògan.
Victory is ours: 'S ann leinnse a tha a' bhuaidh!
