Dutch Pronouns

This is a list of pronouns in Dutch. This includes subject, object, and the possessive. These are used on a daily basis, so don't skip this lesson. We start with the object pronouns such as "I, you, her ..."

I: ik
You: jij, je, u
He: hij
She: zij, ze
We: wij, we
You (pl.): Gij
They: zij

Here are samples to demonstrate how the object pronoun is used in a sentence.

I love you: Ik hou van je
She is beautiful: Ze is mooi
We are happy: Wij zijn gelukkig
They are dancing: Ze dansen

Now we look into the subject pronoun such as "me, him, us, them ...".

Me: mij / me
You: jou, uw
Him: hem
Her: haar
Us: ons
You (pl.): Jullie
Them: hun

These are examples to demonstrate how the subject pronoun is used in a sentence.

Give me your phone number: Geef me je telefoonnummer
I can give you my email: Ik kan je mijn e-mail geven
Tell him to call me: Zeg hem om mij te bellen
Can you call us?: Kunt u ons bellen?

We reach now the possessive adjective part, used to refer to thing we possess. Examples: "my, our, their ...".

My: mijn
Your: jouw, uw
His: zijn
Her: haar
Our: onze
Your (pl.): Jullie
Their: hun

Here are samples to demonstrate how the possessive adjective is used.

My phone number is . . .: Mijn telefoonnummer is ...
His email is . . .: Zijn e-mail is ...
Our dream is to visit Spain: Onze droom is om Spanje te bezoeken
Their country is beautiful: Hun land is mooi

This is the possessive pronoun. Used as an alternative to the possessive adjectives above. Instead of saying "It is my dog" you can say "It is mine".

Mine: van mij
Yours: van jou / van u (formal)
His: van hem
Hers: van haar
Ours: van ons
Yours (pl.): van jullie
Theirs: van hun

These are some examples of the possessive pronoun in a sentence.

The book is mine: Het boek is van mij
Is this pen yours?: Is deze pen van jou?
The shoes are hers: Het zijn haar schoenen
Victory is ours: Aan ons de Overwinning
